Connection is the Precursor to Collaboration

November 20, 20232 min read

Have you ever tried to get someone to do something and they flat out refuse?  No matter the amount of coaxing you do, know matter how many rewards you offer them, you just can’t budge them?

I have been on both sides of this coin.  When my children were teenagers and they didn’t want to do something, man did I ever have to work to get them to buy into what I wanted.  Sometimes it worked, oftentimes it didn’t.

When I couldn’t get them to budge I would feel like a failure.  Even though they thought they won, they didn’t feel good about it.

You could say, “that both parties walked away with a spirit of defeat.”  Instead of feeling connected, everyone experienced instead a feeling of disconnection.

A state of being that people don’t really enjoy, but often accept.

So how do we get people to move? I have found that one way that really works is first to have connection outside of the task.

I found when my kids and I were in a place of enjoying one another, that was the time to share with them how they could help me the following day.

I also found that it really helped to tell them why I needed them specifically for the task and why I didn’t want anyone else.

Often I ended my conversation with the words:  “Honestly, you are really fun to be around and having time with you no matter what the task is really important to me.”

Worded like that and rarely did they put up a fight.

Why?  Connection was established and then collaboration was initiated.

Connection is a precursor to collaboration.
